STORYTELLING CHANGES COMMUNITIES

STORYTELLING CHANGES COMMUNITIES

One of the greatest catalysts for changes is the art of storytelling. We support the learning of that transformative art through our programs and we use that craft to tell the story of groups and organizations that brings incredible value to Hawaiʻi. By sharing powerful stories and helping others to tell their own stories we help to create a Hawaiʻi that is more rich, vibrant, and full of Aloha.

OUR ORGANIZATION

OUR ORGANIZATION

Berad Foundation’s mission is to affect positive change within Hawai‘i by fostering growth within the creative industry and by using the visual arts to tell stories that impacts the community. We do this in three ways, 1) by funding educational and professional development events through Hawai‘i Shoots, 2) through scholarships that supports students and young filmmakers, and 3) through an annual donation of a brand video produced by Berad Studio LLC, for a local non-profit organization.

Berad Foundation is in the process of becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Founded in late 2018, the organization operates as a way for Berad Studio to give back to the Hawaii community that has given so much to the company. Berad Studio was founded in 2013 by Brad Watanabe. Our Board of Directors include Christy Sumida, and Mauna Burgess with Brad Watanabe as the chairperson.

OUR FOUNDER

Brad Watanabe has always been a storyteller, as a teenager making skating videos with his friends, and as a Christian at Harbor Church West Oahu. He studied Graphic Design at Loyala Marymount University, and Apologetics at BIOLA. In 2006, after working in Los Angeles for 6 years at Motion Theory, Brad moved back to Hawaii to be closer to family. He struggled to find a position within the film industry, and took a position doing IT at Anthology Group. After being prodded by producers, friends, and family, Brad transitioned from his job at Anthology to working full-time as a freelance director. In 2013, he started his company Berad Studio. In the years since, Brad has enjoyed a satisfying career shooting commercials, branding videos, and documentary films. Recognizing how difficult it was to find his place in the industry, and the impact that storytelling has both to the filmmaker and the larger community, Brad founded Berad Foundation to support local filmmakers in finding meaningful work in the media industry.
